ARGON 5-2 GAS CYLINDER

Welding is one of the most demanding industrial skills to master, needing a combination of deft control and the right tools to produce quality results. When it comes to mild steel welding, using the right argon 5-2 gas cylinder can be the difference between a perfect weld or a sloppy join.

Argon 5-2 is rising in popularity as a welding mix because of its suitability for mild steel welding, improving the stability of the arc and allowing for higher quality results to happen consistently.

What is an argon 5-2 gas cylinder?

Argon is a non-flammable and non-toxic gas that’s widely used as a shielding agent during many industrial welding processes.

The most common use for argon gas is during tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding and metal inert gas (MIG) welding, creating the weld with consumable and non-consumable electrodes.

Argon gas cylinders are used to protect these processes from atmospheric gases such as oxygen and nitrogen, which can degrade the weld’s quality.

But in small amounts, there’s evidence that oxygen can actually improve the stability of the arc and reduce the tension of the molten metal. This is where an argon 5-2 gas cylinder can make a huge difference to weld quality.

An argon 5-2 gas cylinder mixes 93% argon with 5% carbon dioxide and 2% oxygen, hence the 5-2 title.

When to use argon 5-2 gas cylinders

An argon 5-2 gas cylinder is best used on mild steel welding, particularly with MIG welding equipment and techniques.

However, when it comes to aluminium and stainless steel welding, it’s best to stick with a pure argon gas mix, as the presence of oxygen in the mix can increase the volume of slag for these metals.
